Threats to local schools prompt law enforcement to act

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Two students have been arrested and charged in two separate cases of making threats to schools in the Bay District.

Mosley High School and Hutchison Beach Elementary School were the two schools involved in the incidents.

Mosely High’s principal informed parents that a student allegedly posted a list of names on a whiteboard that he called his “list of results.”

NewsChannel 7 has been told the student made threatening calls to Hutchison Beach Elementary School Friday night.

Panama City Beach Police Chief JR Talamantez said the voicemails were not discovered until Tuesday morning due to the long holiday weekend.

“They told us that at the start of the day they were looking at voicemail on their administrative line, and they discovered several voicemails from what appeared to be a child claiming there was a bomb in the school” , Talamantez said.

He also said PCBP worked with Bay District Schools Police to locate the nine-year-old suspect.

“This child was interviewed and later confessed to making these phone calls,” Talamantez said. “We accuse the child of having made a false report on the bomb.”

The whole event left parents worried for their children’s safety.

“They evacuated the building as a precaution,” Talamantez said.

Bay District Deputy Police Chief Steve Thomas said parents can take steps to stop their children from acting out.

“Watch what your kids are watching,” Thomas said. “TikTok, Facebook, any of the social media sites. They encourage these children to do things. Don’t feel shy to snatch that phone from your child and say, “What are you looking at?”

Parents are also encouraged to monitor their children’s eating and sleeping habits.

“If something doesn’t seem right, it usually isn’t,” Thomas said.

Talamantez and Thomas said no threat was taken lightly.

The Mosley High School student was arrested and charged with disrupting the operation of the school, which is a misdemeanor.

The Beach Elementary student was charged with making a bomb threat.

Their identities are not disclosed by the authorities.
