Sabers winger Evander Kane opens up about business rumors, social rules of hockey and his strong start – The Athletic

Buffalo Sabers winger Evander Kane is enjoying one of the strongest starts of his career, and it comes when his name began to reappear in the NHL rumor mill. In the final year of his contract, the talented Kane is set to score 40 goals, and his uncertain future has put him back in the midst of business speculation. A big season could catapult him to the top of the 2018 free agent class (we currently have him at No.4) if John Tavares re-signs with the Islanders.

Kane chatted with Craig Custance of The Athletic about these potential distractions, how the NBA promotes its players better than the NHL, and more in this conversation on Friday:

Custance: You are finally healthy to start the season for a long time. How has this had the most impact on your game?

Kane: It’s obviously the difference to be able to play. This is the main. I came to camp the last three seasons before this in great shape and ready to go and had some weird injuries in those first handfuls of games. I was lucky enough to sort of get rid of it. It was nice to be able to get off to a good start and continue from last year.

CC: When you injured yourself previously and tried to pick up a pace, how long did it take before you felt your best?

Kane: I always felt like I was shooting myself in the foot; I was always trying to come back ASAP to play, kind of playoff attitude. Once I felt good to be able to play, I would come back, and last year I definitely came back too early. When the doctor tells you six to eight weeks and you come back in three and a half with four broken ribs, it’s probably a little too early.
