Freedom Learning Group and Instructure Partner on the Course Catalog and OER Developed by Military Spouses

LAKE MARY, Florida., November 27, 2019 / PRNewswire / – Freedom Learning Group has partnered with Instructure to launch “Mission: OER,” an innovative program that deploys spouses of U.S. military personnel to scale-up high-quality digital OER courseware based on industry best practices, released under an open license, and available for educators to use, reuse, and share directly from Instructure’s Canvas learning management platform.

In 2020, FLG will launch OER development efforts in high-demand and job-growing disciplines in STEM, IT, business, accounting and finance through multiple cohorts of internships. in instructional design. During internships, joint military professionals – often unemployed due to constant changes of duty station – will reapply their industry experience and turn to educational content development. Through the program, nurses, scientists, engineers, lawyers, cybersecurity analysts and data science experts will create comprehensive OER courses including educational content, homework, discussions, rubrics, banks questions and other educational resources.

“Open Education supports student success by providing free, fair and accessible content,” said Tara Gunther, Vice President of Partnerships at Instructure. “Our partnership with Freedom Learning Group will give Canvas users access to high quality content in a variety of topics that is readily available and customizable for educators.”

“As a biochemist and technical writer, being unable to find work in my field and being unemployed overseas with a master’s degree has been a depressing consequence of being a military wife,” said Mariah covington, graduated from the first cohort of the program. “FLG ultimately created a great solution. I work in my field at FLG, earn a competitive income, and contribute to the education industry while continuing my professional development at multiple levels.”
