Baton Rouge police officer’s office ‘trunk-or-treat’ brings out community and law enforcement

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge agent’s office held its third annual Trunk-or-Treat, giving kids the chance to enjoy Halloween days earlier.

Shymeka Washington attended the event with her daughter, niece and nephew.

“They had a blast, they walked away with tons of candy,” Washington said.

Dozens of families spent the evening downtown eating and having fun.

“We went through a pandemic and we couldn’t do what we used to do anymore, but of course the governor lifted the mask mandate. So of course you get a little normal again, still social distancing, and giving the kids something safe to do. Fun and safe, ”said Terrica Williams, East Baton Rouge officer.

She said the first annual trunk or treat started with around 100 kids and she gets bigger each year.

Along with all the fun and candy, the event serves to bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement.

“They can interact with the agents and the agents are nice to them. They understand that the officers are there to help them, they don’t have to be afraid of them, ”Washington said.

Members of the Baton Rouge Police, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and Baton Rouge Firefighters attended the event.

For the Washington family, the event gives them the chance to have fun and bring a sense of unity to the community.

“I think it’s a very safe and healthy way for them to be able to cheat or deal with whatever is going on right now. I think it’s the perfect way for them to be able to enjoy a safe vacation, ”Washington said.
